The recent assassination attempt on former President Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has lawmakers demanding answers from the Secret Service.
On July 13, a gunman opened fire, killing an attendee and injuring Trump. Investigations revealed significant security lapses, including a lack of coordination between the Secret Service and local law enforcement, allowing the attacker to fire from a rooftop.
During the hearing, Rep. Pat Fallon expressed shock: “I counted seven different ways they could have stopped that threat. And they didn’t.” Democrats also voiced frustration, but tensions rose when GOP lawmakers invited their own witnesses without informing the full panel.
Rep. Mike Waltz added: “We need accountability. The American people demand answers.” This incident brings back memories of past Secret Service failures, including the 2014 White House breach. However, contrasting successful protections like the 2008 campaign where security was flawless highlights how crucial effective coordination is.
Rep. Jason Crow, a Democrat, emphasized: “The fault lies with the Secret Service—they did not do their job.” Communication failures allowed the gunman to bypass security checkpoints.
While political tensions between Democrats and Republicans flared during the hearing, the call for accountability from the Secret Service remains central. The agency has faced similar scrutiny before, but this time lawmakers are determined to uncover the reasons behind the failure to protect Trump effectively.
